2026 in the Books

The Seventh Annual Juneteenth Half Marathon & 10K brought a record 657 runners and 150 volunteers to the storied (and hilly) Civil War Defenses of Washington Trail—National Park Service’s 6.2mi off-road, natural terrain trail located east of the Anacostia River in Washington, DC’s Wards 7 and 8. RunJuneteenth’s annual free trail race – its flagship event of the year — continues to serve the dual purpose of bringing together the many disparate running communities throughout the region while also removing the cost and awareness barriers that keep many people — particularly low-income residents of DC’s Wards 7 and 8 — from running and outdoor recreation. Our lead sponsor Altra Running was on-hand with free trail shoe demos for all interested participants and Pacers Running provided gift cards to all podium finishers for the Half Marathon & 10K events.

This year’s post-race Juneteenth celebration at Fort Stanton Park was its liveliest yet, featuring free BBQ courtesy of Rosebud’s BBQ, free recovery stations courtesy of Athletic Recovery Lab & REI, free sports massages courtesy of the Micah Touch & students from Howard University’s School of Physical Therapy and DJ Bing on the 1s and 2s.

The Juneteenth Half Marathon & 10K runs along the entirety of the Civil War Defenses of Washington Trail (one of Washington, DC’s hidden gems). This beautiful off-road trail traverses between the Anacostia and Deanwood neighborhoods of the District, connecting five Civil War fort sites throughout. Race participants should be cautioned, this is a proper trail run (i.e. dirt, elevation & not for the faint of heart).
